Each individual will have a tailored Care Plan and Risk Assessment which will guide staff to supporting residents with a person centered approach. There are many ongoing developments in this field, especially to provide sensory activities to suit the varying levels of Dementia. What is Dementia?

Dementia is a progressive condition which results in the deterioration of memory, reasoning, communication skills and functional abilities. This is caused by structural and chemical changes within the brain, eventually dimishing healthy brain cells.

Types of Dementia

Alzheimer’s Disease
The most common type where the structure and chemistry of the brain leads to cell death.

Vascular Dementia
Caused by conditions such as Strokes or Small vessel disease which reduces the level of Oxygen to the brain resulting in communication difficulties and confusion.

Frontotemporal Dementia
Is a rare form of Dementia resulting in changes to people’s behaviour and personality.

Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Caused by small protein deposits which appear within the nerve cells in the brain, resulting in problems with memory, concentration and language skills.
